50 Ways to Use Discovery Education Streaming (and Beyond) (Demian, Jannita with Kim Randall) – The CUE Community

Description: A deeper look at Discovery Education streaming (unitedstreaming), its hidden treasures and recent updates. Media is transforming teachers’ classrooms by maximizing their subscription to this great media library.Well, starting out there are not enough chairs, and people turned away.

News: unitedstreaming is now Discovery Streaming, so Discovery content is coming up on the streaming. Also, they are now approved as a vendor for MicroSoft settlement funds (which means if you’re a California district with funds from the settlement with MicroSoft software, it can be spent to purchase Discovery streaming.

You can add a “new video widget” to your Discovery streaming front page, so you can see what’s new. Add it under My Profile and click on Customize home page (Discovery Educator page will be changed, not your browser homepage).

Things on it that are useful, BUT not videos:

Images (obviously not Creative Commons)

Audio (Songs)

Articles (Funk and Wagnells Encyclopedia)

Clip-Art

Lesson Plans

But what about videos?

Many videos have closed captioning

Edit icon means you can edit it

Project video with captioning on white board, and do sentence/writing analysis of caption on board

Related Materials will have standards, quizzes

Teacher Center is a trove of materials, assignment builder, writing prompts, calendar with notable events for a given date.

Assignment builder is the place to give students access to see videos themselves. They shouldn’t be on the DiscoveryStreaming themselves. This will bring up bandwidth issues.

Professional Development has interactive training (some handouts)

Teacher tips gives information like teaching tips (how to use these)

Trainers toolkit has users guide, hand outs, integration ideas, agendas for training

Educators Network is the DEN home. If you become a STAR, you are eligible for academies in summer, which are paid for by Discovery (but may require a deposit)
